Climate Control has supplied and installed ceiling insulation Melbourne wide since 1965. Most of the heat a Melbourne home loses in winter escapes up through the ceiling, and most of the heat it gains in summer comes down through the roof space. That makes the ceiling the first place to insulate and usually the one that gives the biggest return. We work from our own factory and warehouse in Nunawading.

Why the ceiling comes first
Warm air rises, so an uninsulated or poorly insulated ceiling is where a heated house loses the most. In summer the roof space can get far hotter than the outside air, and that heat comes straight down into the rooms below. Good ceiling insulation slows both, which means the heater and air conditioner run less and the house holds a steadier temperature.
Many older Melbourne homes still have the thin batts they were built with, or batts that have been flattened by tradespeople walking through the roof space over the years. Flattened or patchy insulation performs well below its label, so a home can look insulated from the manhole and still be losing a lot of heat.
Which R-value is right for a Melbourne ceiling?
Melbourne sits in Climate Zone 6 under the National Construction Code. The Australian Government’s Your Home guide to insulation explains how R-values work across climate zones. For a ceiling in this climate, R5.0 or R6.0 is the range worth aiming for. Below that you leave comfort on the table. Well above it, each extra step of R-value buys back less for the money.
Lower R-values still have a place. R2.5 to R4.1 batts are often the right choice when topping up existing insulation that is in good condition, or where the roof space is tight and a thicker batt would not fit without being compressed. We check the roof space at the measure and recommend what actually suits it, not simply the biggest number.
Ceiling insulation products we install
We are an approved distributor and installer of Fletcher Insulation Pink Batts, and we also install Gold Batts and polyester batts for clients who prefer a non-itch option. All of our ceiling batts are sized for standard 450 mm and 600 mm joist spacing.
If you would rather do the job yourself, you can buy ceiling insulation batts online and collect them free from Nunawading or have them delivered.
How a ceiling insulation job works
- Measure and quote. We inspect the roof space, measure the ceiling area, check the condition of any existing insulation and note downlights, ducting and access points. You get a written quote with the product and R-value spelled out.
- Removal if needed. If the existing insulation is damaged, contaminated or too far gone to top up, we can take it out first. See our insulation removal service.
- Installation. Batts are laid snug between the joists with no gaps at the ends and no compression. Gaps and squashed batts are where most ceiling insulation quietly loses its performance, so this is where a careful install matters most.
- Clearances and safety. Insulation must be kept clear of downlights, flues and transformers unless the fitting is rated for contact. This is a safety requirement, not a suggestion, and we check every fitting.
- Clean up. Offcuts and packaging are removed and the roof space is left tidy.
Ceiling insulation for builders and new homes
We supply and install ceiling insulation for builders across Melbourne, from single new homes to townhouse and multi-residential projects. Builders get one point of contact for supply and installation and a crew that turns up when the frame is ready. Get in touch to talk through your build schedule.
Ceiling insulation or roof insulation?
Ceiling insulation sits flat on the ceiling between the joists, which suits most Melbourne homes with a pitched roof and a roof space above the rooms. Roof insulation follows the line of the roof itself, which is what a skillion roof, a cathedral ceiling or exposed rafters need. If you are not sure which applies to your home, read ceiling insulation vs roof insulation, or see our roof insulation installation service.
Ceiling insulation questions
Can new batts go over my existing ceiling insulation?
Often, yes. If the existing insulation is dry, clean and reasonably even, a top-up layer can lift the total R-value without the cost of removal. If it is damp, damaged, contaminated or badly compressed, it is usually better to remove it first. We will tell you which at the measure.
Do downlights affect ceiling insulation?
Yes. Older downlights need clearance around them, which leaves gaps in the insulation and lets heat escape. Some modern LED fittings are rated to be covered. We work around whatever is in your ceiling safely, and can point out where an upgraded fitting would let you close a gap.
Can I install ceiling batts myself?
Many homeowners do, especially in an easy-access single-storey roof space. Wear protective gear, never stand on the ceiling plaster, and keep clear of electrical fittings. If the roof space is low, crowded with ducting or needs old insulation removed, a professional install is usually safer and quicker.
