Acoustic insulation R3.1 is the deepest batt in the Pink Batts Soundbreak range at 110 mm, and it carries the highest thermal rating of the three. It is the one to reach for where the cavity is deep enough to take it and you want sound control and thermal performance out of the same batt. Made in Australia by Fletcher Insulation and covered by a lifetime warranty.

Depth is what makes it work. A thicker layer of glasswool absorbs more of the sound energy passing through a cavity, which is why the 110 mm batt is specified where quiet matters most.

Where acoustic insulation R3.1 Soundbreak is used

  • Between floor joists in a two storey home, where footsteps and voices carry down into the living areas
  • Ceilings between a living space and a bedroom above
  • Walls framed deeper than a standard stud, including furred out and service walls
  • Home theatres and music rooms, where the wall has been built out for the purpose
  • Walls and floors above a garage or a workshop
  • Townhouse and apartment projects where the separating construction allows the full 110 mm

Check the cavity depth before ordering. A 110 mm batt compressed into a 90 mm frame loses part of both its acoustic and its thermal performance, and it will not friction fit properly.

Batt width matches the framing. Use the 430 mm batt for studs or joists at 450 mm centres and the 580 mm batt at 600 mm centres. Other products at this rating sit in the R3.1 insulation category.

Which Soundbreak batt do you need?

All three do the same job. The cavity decides which one fits.

  • 70 mm frame: R2.0 Soundbreak
  • 90 mm frame, the most common internal wall: R2.7 Soundbreak
  • 110 mm and deeper cavities, and between floor joists: R3.1 Soundbreak, this page

Measure the stud or the joist, not the finished surface. If you are working from a plan rather than an open frame, send the detail through and we will confirm the right batt before you order.

Common questions

Will R3.1 Soundbreak fit a standard 90 mm stud wall?

No. At 110 mm it is too thick for a 90 mm frame, and squashing it in costs you performance rather than adding any. For a standard internal wall use R2.7 Soundbreak, which is made for that cavity. R3.1 belongs in deeper construction and between floor joists.

How many packs do I need?

Measure the area in square metres and divide by the pack coverage, 2.99 m² for 430 mm batts and 4.04 m² for 580 mm batts. There are 6 batts in a pack rather than the 10 you get in the thinner ratings, so the same area takes more packs than it would in R2.0. Round up and allow for offcuts.

Is R3.1 quieter than R2.7?

A thicker batt absorbs more, so in the same wall it will do a little more. The bigger difference comes from how the wall is built. Sealed gaps, the plasterboard on each face and whether the frame carries vibration between the two sides all matter more than the last few millimetres of batt thickness. Fill the cavity you have properly and build the wall well.
